A Big Quake Shakes China
Last Monday, a powerful earthquake rocked a remote area along China's far western border. When the dust cleared, thousands of homes had been destroyed. Officials said it was the worst quake in the area in more than 50 years.
The town of Qongkurqak (Chong-ker-chak) was the hardest hit. Nearly all of the town's 30,000 residents were left homeless.
About 266 people were killed and 2,000 injured. The government sent tents, blankets and supplies.
On Wednesday, signs of everyday life began to return. Vendors began selling food at their battered markets. "I opened because we all have to eat," said Yusan Aisan. "Life goes on."
