A Sky-High Plan for New York

And the winner is...the pointy one! Last week, officials chose Daniel Libeskind's design for rebuilding the World Trade Center site over another finalist (see TFK 2/14/03). It includes a 1,776-foot-tall spire with hanging gardens at its top. Part of the old foundation would be used for a memorial to September 11 victims.

"The plan captures the soaring optimism of our city and honors the eternal spirit of our fallen heroes," said John Whitehead, head of the selection committee.

Big questions remain about how the project will be funded and what changes owners of the site will make.

In a timeforkids.com poll, 60% of the 30,000 kids who voted preferred the runner-up design.
