Talk About a Lucky Dog!
He was on thin ice. On February 19, a pup named ROVER escaped from his Newark, New Jersey, home. The rottweiler mix ended up stranded on a floating ice patch on the Passaic River! A passerby alerted the local Humane Society. Its manager, George Smith, and fireman Tom McDermott went to help. They paddled a rowboat through ice for hours before snaring Rover and coaxing him onto the boat. The dog was a little cold but in perfect health. Last week, McDermott adopted Rover and changed his name to Lucky! McDermott says he feels lucky too: "He's a wonderful dog."
