Pandas on the Move
Last Friday, visitors to Tennessee's Memphis Zoo got their first glimpse of a rare sight: two giant pandas climbing rocks, nibbling bamboo--and just looking cute. The bears arrived from China on April 7.
Le Le, a four-year-old male, and Ya Ya, a two-year-old female, are on loan from two zoos in China. The Memphis Zoo will pay China $1 million a year to keep the bears for the next 10 years.
Giant pandas are endangered. There are fewer than 1,000 in the wild. Another 140 live in zoos and breeding centers, mostly in China.
"The pandas are spoiled because they got so much attention from their keepers in China," says Memphis zookeeper Janet Cooper. It looks as if the bears will be getting even more attention in Memphis: Officials expect Le Le (Luh Luh) and Ya Ya will have more than 600 visitors every hour!
