Pets Put on the Pounds

You might want to think twice before you give Fido or Kitty that extra treat. Pets in the United States and Europe eat far too much, according to a new study from the National Research Council.

The report estimates that 25% of pets are overweight. Overeating can be bad for the health of dogs and cats. Excess weight can lead to diabetes and heart disease.

Why are pets getting so pudgy? One reason is that their owners often reward good behavior with food. "Pets are members of our families. We show them affection by sharing food and giving them treats," says Kathryn Michel, a veterinary nutritionist at the University of Pennsylvania.

Ever heard of the Atkins diet? Maybe it's time for a Catkins diet!
