A Golden Performance

So what if Michelle Kwan didn't take the gold at the 1998 Olympics? Kwan, 19, is on top of the world! On April 1, she won the women's title at the World Figure Skating Championships in Nice, France. It was Kwan's third world title. She also won in 1996 and 1998. An American woman hasn't won three times since Peggy Fleming did it in the 1960s.

Kwan, who attends college in her home state of California, lost last year to Russian figure skater Maria Butyrskaya. This year Maria finished third. Russia's Irina Slutskaya placed second.

"I just felt really, really strong out there," said Kwan, who hopes to compete in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. "I think this is the most satisfying championship for me."
