Five Little Piggies, All the Same

These little piggies could save lives! Last week scientists announced that they had cloned pigs.

Millie, Christa, Alexis, Carrel and Dotcom were born on March 5 in Blacksburg, Virginia. The female piglets were created by duplicating the cells of an adult. They are exact copies of their mother.

The birth of these pigs could lead to major medical advances for humans. Scientists hope eventually to transplant organs from cloned pigs into humans. Already, some humans have heart valves that came from pigs.

More than 110,000 people in the U.S. and Europe are waiting to receive new hearts, kidneys and livers. Pig organs are close in size to human ones, so scientists are optimistic that these cute little clones could be life-saving heroes.

"We hope to overcome the shortage of human organs," said Dave Ayares of PPL Therapeutics, the company based in Scotland that cloned the pint-sized porkers.
