Hot. Cold. It's a Matter of Taste

Everyone knows the taste of sweet and sour, but what do hot and cold taste like? Scientists at the Yale School of Medicine say temperature has its own taste. This week's Nature magazine tongue causes people to taste sweetness, and cooling it produces a salty or sour taste. Chilling the back of the tongue, on the other hand, creates a sour or bitter sensation. No one knows whether these sensations affect flavor, but experts suspect they are too faint for the brain to detect over the strong flavors of the food we eat every day.
