Violent Storms Whip Through Georgia
Wood and bricks from destroyed buildings rained down on Camilla, Georgia, on February 14. Fierce tornadoes swept through the southwestern part of the state, killing at least 18 people and injuring more than 100.
Unlike most tornadoes, these storms tore through the area at night. Most residents were asleep, unprepared to find a safe place to take shelter from the howling wind and lashing rain.
Vice President Al Gore visited Camilla last week. Rescuers were working around the clock to clear away the rubble and restore electricity.
"I've been very impressed with the way this community has pulled together," said Gore.
He told tornado victims that they could count on the nation's prayers and on getting help to rebuild the town.
