Wake Me When It's Over
Panda fans made a special trip for the occasion. On February 11, visitors to California's San Diego Zoo got to see Hua Mei, a giant panda, for the first time since her birth in August. Hua Mei, though, could not have cared less!
"She slept the entire day," says the zoo's Christina Simmons. Hua Mei sometimes sleeps 20 hours a day. When the six-month-old is awake, she's fun to watch. She nibbles on bamboo, explores and climbs trees in her backyard. Thanks to the zoo's live panda camera, you can see her at www.sandiegozoo.com
Hua Mei is the first U.S.-born giant panda to live past infancy. Fewer than 1,000 of these endangered bears survive in the world.
