Whiteout!
A surprise winter storm barreled across the South and raced up the East Coast last week. "It started to look like a monster," said Ann Long of Troy, North Carolina. "It's amazing how fast something that is so pretty can turn into something so ugly." The storm dumped a record two feet of snow on the state, forcing most people to stay home. Here, a lone car braves Interstate 85 in Durham.
In Washington, D.C., government offices were shut down for two days. At week's end, the South was bracing for yet another storm.
