KIRSTIN HAYS can really talk turkey. She won her first turkey-calling contest at the age of 5, after hearing her parents imitate the wild birds. Since then, Kirstin, now 9, has won 25 trophies. She's currently the champion female caller in Ohio and Missouri, beating out seasoned adults!
Kirstin can make about 15 different turkey sounds--from clucking to gobbling to purring--by blowing through a horseshoe-shaped caller. She practices in the woods behind her Atlantic, Pennsylvania, home. "One turkey got close enough for me to touch," she says. "That was exciting."
Kirstin travels to calling contests throughout the East, South and Midwest, where grown-up callers flock to her for advice. "People want to know how to do it," says Kirstin, "and I like to show them."
