Not Enough Kids In School
Children's education received a bad report card last Thursday. In its annual State of the World's Children study, the United Nations said that 121 million children around the world do not go to school. About 54% of those kids are girls.
Carol Bellamy, the executive director of UNICEF, says a lack of free schooling is the main reason girls do not attend school. According to Bellamy, when poor families are required to pay tuition, they often educate a boy rather than a girl. "We believe that the failure to invest in girls' education puts in jeopardy more development goals than any other single action," says Bellamy.
UNICEF hopes that by encouraging countries to offer free schooling and by raising more money to set up new schools, more girls will make the grade. Visit www.unicefusa.org to help.
