WHO: Henry Winkler

CLAIM TO FAME: Winkler is an author, director, actor and producer. (Did you see him in the movie Holes?) The Zippity Zinger is the fourth novel in the Hank Zipzer series, which Winkler writes with a partner, Lin Oliver. It will be published this month.

Q Where do you get the material for your books about Hank?

A The events are from my life, and then we bend and twist them.

Q As a child with a learning disability, how did you cope?

A When I was in the fourth grade, I couldn't even read a book. I learned that I have to work harder than everybody else.

Q Where did your intense will to succeed come from?

A Ever since I was 7, I knew that I wanted to be an actor. So I never took my eye off what I wanted. I just figured out how to do what I wanted to do.

Q What advice do you have for kids with learning difficulties?

A Work on your self-esteem. Every day, have a glass of self-esteem with breakfast.

Q What do you want kids to learn from your books?

A First, I want kids to laugh. Also, if you think you have a problem, look next door--others do too.
