Spotlight: J.K. Rowling
J.K. Rowling is a wizard at storytelling. The English writer's first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, has cast a spell over kids and adults and become a best seller in Britain and the U.S. But Rowling won't take all the credit. The former teacher didn't plan to write kids' books until one day in 1990, when, she says, "Harry just strolled into my head fully formed."
Harry, 11, is an orphan who lives with his horrid relatives, the Dursleys, until he discovers he's a wizard and heads for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry earned the single mom a nice paycheck after a time of toil and trouble.
Rowling's second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is also charmed. A Number 1 best seller in Britain, it hits the U.S. in June. Readers are already placing orders for it! Next: a Harry Potter movie is in the works!
