TFK Q&A: Barbie
Who Barbie
Favorite Color Pink
Claim To Fame Introduced on March 9, 1959. Now the most successful doll in history
Q So, Barbie, your 40th birthday is this week. You're famous, you're beautiful, and you and your products raked in $1.7 billion last year. How do you explain your lasting success?
A Clothes! I've got the coolest gear of any toy on the market.
Q When you were first introduced back in 1959, you were called a "teenage fashion model." Is that still your profession?
A No way. I may be just 11 1/2 inches tall, but I've outgrown that job! I like to try all sorts of roles. (For me, it's as easy as changing clothes.) I've been an astronaut (1965), a gymnast (1975) and a W.N.B.A. player (1998). These days, I'm a working woman. Check out that cell phone!
Q How are things with Ken?
A Well, we've been together for 28 years, and I still think he's a total doll! Also, Ken's much better at conversation than that furry Furby thing.
Q Where do you go from here? Any plans for the 21st century?
A More CD-ROMs, more websites and Barbie chat rooms. And, of course, lots more fabulous outfits!
