Illegal Visitors, Legal Jobs?
Last week, President Bush announced a plan to let illegal immigrants apply for permission to work in the United States legally.
There are about 8 million illegal immigrants in the country. Bush said his new plan would help protect those who have jobs. In the past, he said, the U.S. has "welcomed the talent and the character of immigrant families."
Some critics say that the plan will reward immigrants who have broken U.S. laws to enter the country. And some worry that these workers will take away jobs that unemployed Americans could fill.
But others say the new proposal could help hard-working laborers. "At least that's a good start," said Florencio Guzman Silva, a bricklayer from Mexico.
