The Big Fix-Up
On George Washington's birthday, February 22, hundreds of people stared up at the lacy grid of metal and fabric encasing the Washington Monument. "The view was magnificent," said James Carney of Oklahoma City.
The 555-foot monument had been closed for repairs since October. But the fancy new scaffolding created by architect Michael Graves makes it safe again for visitors. They can climb the 897 steps or ride the elevator to the observation deck. They can also watch workers repair most of the building's 36,000 stones. The fix-up should be complete by July 4, 2000.
