Where They Stand on the Issues
Vice President Al Gore
Education He has a $170 billion 10-year plan to hire more teachers, help reduce class size and create after-school programs.
Taxes He supports lower taxes but says the Federal Government should pay back its debts first. He wants to create tax-free "learning" accounts.
World Affairs He says the U.S. should lead in promoting democracy and reducing weapons around the world, using military force if necessary.
Gun Control He wants child-safety locks on guns and stricter rules for buying guns. He supports requiring photo identification for gun purchases.
Health Care He wants to make sure every child is insured by 2005. He also wants to make health care more affordable for low-income families.
Governor George W. Bush
Education He wants states and towns to have more control over their schools, and parents to be able to choose where their kids go to school.
Taxes He says he will cut more taxes than Gore and will reject any increase in income tax rates. He promises a $460 billion tax cut over five years.
World Affairs He says our military shouldn’t get involved in too many conflicts in other countries. He would work with friendly nations to promote peace.
Gun Control He supports owning guns for hunting and the right to carry personal weapons for protection. He says we don’t need new gun laws.
Health Care He has a plan to provide money to poor families to help them pay for health care. He feels Gore’s plan will cost too much.
