A Sister's Story Ends

Not many people become famous at age 104. But that's how old Sarah ("Sadie") Delany was in 1993 when she and her "little" sister Bessie, then 102, published a remarkable book, Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years. The sisters, daughters of a former slave, told the story of their busy lives, pushing aside racism everywhere they went. Sadie, left, was a teacher; Bessie, right, who died in 1995, was a dentist. "I never let prejudice stop me from what I wanted to do in this life," Sadie said. Last week, at 109, Sadie died at her home in Mount Vernon, New York.
