An Agreement, but No Peace
![]() WORLDS APART Middle East leaders Barak, left, and Arafat, far right, didn't go near each other at the summit. |
Despite a truce between the leaders, violence continued in the Middle East last week. President Clinton met with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat at an emergency summit in Egypt. By October 16, Clinton had got the two leaders to agree to a cease-fire.
They set a 48-hour deadline to stop the fighting. Then they agreed to meet again. At first, there were signs that the tension was easing. Israelis opened border crossings between Israeli and Arab regions. Palestinians arrested anti-Israeli terrorists.
But battles in the streets raged on. "We don’t care about the deadline," said Palestinian Teissir Natche, who threw stones at Israelis. "We just want a Palestinian state."
