Winter Twisters Hit The South
No one is ever really ready to face a tornado. But last week the folks in Jackson, Tennessee, were caught completely off guard. Tornado season in the Southern states doesn't usually begin until March. That didn't stop deadly twisters from ripping through Jackson and nearby areas in the middle of January.
Fierce winds whipped through western and central Tennessee. More twisters hit Arkansas on Thursday. The storms left a trail of devastation: 17 people dead and more than 1,600 homes and businesses damaged.
After the storms, Vice President Al Gore visited Jackson, where his mom grew up. "We're going to bring a lot of help in here," he told Jackson residents. "We're going to help you rebuild."
