Spotlight: Jason Crowe

Vedran Smailovic (smile-o-vitch) played the cello while bullets whined all around him. He sat in the ruins of a bombed-out bakery in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, making beautiful music in the middle of a war. He played for 22 days--one day for each of the 22 men, women and children who had died waiting to buy bread when Bosnian Serbs attacked them in 1995.

Jason Crowe, 12, of Newburgh, Indiana, has never met Smailovic. But Jason is so impressed by the man's courage that he wants to raise money to build a statue in Sarajevo to honor Smailovic.

"I had to do something to keep his message alive," says Jason. "The answer to war is harmony and creative energy."

Jason is getting the word out on his home page and in The Informer, a newspaper he publishes every two months. The Informer has subscribers in 26 states and four foreign countries. Most of its articles are about kids who have done cool things for their communities. Jason's dream is to get kids all over the world involved in his statue project.

"The statue may not stop war, but it will unite kids and build relationships, understanding and friendships," Jason says. "These things are the stepping-stones that will stop the wars."
