It’s a Whole New Game

Crowds in New York City wait for PS2s to go on sale.

Well, do you know anybody who GOT one? You know, a Sony PlayStation2 video-game console. The $299 systems went on sale in the U.S. last Thursday. At some stores, hundreds of shoppers lined up and waited for hours in hopes of getting one of just 500,000 available PS2s. The new system not only has supersharp graphics, it can play CDs and digital versatile discs (DVDs) too.

Nintendo and Microsoft Corp. are getting ready to release even faster machines in 2001.

Sony had planned to unleash a million PS2s, but a shortage of parts made it impossible for the company to build them all. Sony promises 1.3 million by the holidays, but video-game fanatics did not want to wait. Some didn’t even blink at the price.

"I would have paid $500," said Leon Lay, 43, of Chicago, Illinois.
