The New York Yankees Win the World Series!
![]() |
In New York City, it was the best of times, and it was the worst of times. On Thursday, jubilant Yankees fans celebrated their team’s third straight World Series win and 26th championship. Mets fans, who had waited 14 years for a Series, were brokenhearted. Their Amazin’ Mets won only one game.
The Yankees clinched the best-of-seven-games series with a 4-2 victory in the fifth game. Shortstop Derek Jeter hit two homers and scored six times in the series. He was named Most Valuable Player. Jeter gave credit to his team, saying, "This is a group of MVPS."
One Yankees fan summed up the feelings of many in New York City: "I’m ecstatic," said Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. "It was a great Subway Series."
