Spotlight: Jenny Thompson
![]() |
No U.S. female athlete has ever won as many Olympic medals as swimmer Jenny Thompson has. She’s got 10—from the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games—and eight of them are gold. On October 16, Thompson, 27, was named Sportswoman of the Year for her victories from August 1999 to July 2000.
Thompson earned the title from the Women’s Sports Foundation, a charity that strives to get more women involved in sports. Thompson says even she is surprised by her record-breaking success in the pool. "I’ve just been doing what I love to do," she says. Swimming, though, will soon take a backseat to some serious studying. Thompson starts medical school in New York City next August.
