Spotlight
Do librarians really know which books are the best? That's what Laura Uncapher, 13, wanted to find out. So she read all 82 winners of the Newbery Medal, the top prize for U.S. children's literature. Every year since 1922, librarians have selected award winners. Laura's quest began three years ago, when her fourth-grade teacher in Orlando, Florida, asked students to read one of the award-winning books.
Most of the winners, Laura told TFK, "will teach you something." She liked some more than others. Among her favorites was the 1930 winner, Hitty, Her First Hundred Years. Laura finished the Newbery list in January and has a new challenge: to read all of the books on her shelves! Visit timeforkids.com/newbery for more.
