A Tragic Day In Spain
Last Thursday evening, hundreds of thousands of Spaniards gathered in Barcelona and Madrid to honor victims of an attack that had rocked the nation that morning.
A series of 10 explosions hit commuter trains and train stations in Madrid during the busy rush hour. At least 199 people were killed, and more than 1,400 were wounded. This assault on the nation's capital is the worst terrorist attack in Spain's history.
Spanish officials first blamed a national terrorist group called ETA but are now investigating another group too. An Arabic newspaper in England reported that a militant Muslim group connected with the terrorist network al-Qaeda had claimed responsibility.
As the week ended, police continued to search the rubble for clues. "We will bring the guilty to justice," said Spain's prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar.
