Blazing a Trail on Television
In the 1980s, women continued their fight for workplace equality. They faced a tough battle, balancing work and home responsibilities.
Oprah Winfrey became one of the most successful women in the United States. The Oprah Winfrey Show first aired on national TV in 1986. Winfrey, now 50, helps people cope with problems, interviews celebrities, runs a popular book club and oversees a magazine.
Having grown up poor, Winfrey now donates money to children's causes. She is building a school in South Africa. "I understand what it means to be poor and not have your possibilities revealed to you," she told TIME magazine.
