Pledging Change?

Michael Newdow, a doctor and lawyer from California, wants the Pledge of Allegiance to lose two words. Last week, he argued his views before the U.S. Supreme Court. Newdow wants the words under God deleted from the pledge, which was written in 1892 without that phrase. It was added in 1954. Newdow doesn't believe in God and says his third-grade daughter shouldn't be pressured daily into reciting the entire pledge. He says the pledge should represent all Americans, not just those who believe in God.

Opposing lawyers argued that the words reflect ideals that guided the country's Founding Fathers. The court is expected to decide on the case this summer.
