A Week of Violence in Iraq
Last Wednesday was a sad and difficult day for Americans serving in Iraq. Four U.S. civilians were killed in Fallujah. Northwest of the city, five American soldiers died when a bomb exploded under their armored vehicle.
Fallujah is 35 miles west of Baghdad. Many of the area's residents remain loyal to former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. They want the Americans to leave. After the killings in the city, many people took to the streets in celebration. "Fallujah is the graveyard of Americans," they shouted.
Iraq's American administrator, Paul Bremer, condemned the killings. He promised that the "deaths will not go unpunished."
The violence underscored the difficulties that lie ahead as the U.S. prepares to hand over political control to Iraqis on June 30.
