Warning: Animals At Risk
Hundreds of animal species in danger of extinction, including those shown here, are defenseless in their habitats. In a study published this month in the science journal Nature, scientists warned that many rare animals live in areas where they can be hunted or hurt by logging or mining. "We have few protected areas in biologically rich places like Florida or Hawaii," said Stuart Pimm, an ecology professor at Duke University.
There are at least 300 animal species that are critically endangered, or on the verge of extinction. They include a variety of birds, amphibians and mammals. "This study is only the tip of the iceberg," said researcher Ana Rodrigues. "Studies like these are critical first steps toward preventing future species extinctions."
