Ready To Make Some Noise

It's going to be a noisy summer in the eastern U.S. A huge group of cicadas is expected to make a big racket in 15 states. Scientists are predicting that trillions of the bugs will appear.

Cicadas spend most of their lives underground. The group that is expected to pop up in May or June is called Brood X, or 10. This group emerges only every 17 years! The harmless bugs will live in trees and shrubs for up to four weeks. They will mate and then die.

If cicadas invade your turf, "watch them, appreciate them and then let them go about their business," advises John Cooley, a University of Connecticut researcher.
