Keeping Africa Green
To Wangari Maathai, planting trees is second nature. In 1977, Maathai, 63, of Kenya, Africa, founded the Green Belt Movement. It has since spread to 15 African nations, and its members have planted 25 million trees to slow deforestation. On March 29, Maathai was awarded the Sophie Prize for fighting "fearlessly for the protection of the environment and human rights."
