Spotlight

Kristen Stryker was scared. As a 15-year-old walking into a youth prison in 2001, Kristen didn't know whether inmates would be open to her plan to start a gardening program. But Help Others to Help Yourself has blossomed. Prisoners in Ohio, where Kristen lives, grow vegetables and donate them to food banks. Last year, they grew 3,000 pounds of veggies! Kristen started the program to help people like her brother Jeremy, who served time in jail. He died last year of leukemia. In 2002, President George W. Bush gave Kristen a community service award. On April 7 at the Volvo-for-Life Awards, she won $50,000 for her charity. "I'd like this to be a national program," Kristen says, "to have an even bigger impact."
