A Tribute to Veterans

Last Thursday, a new national monument opened in Washington, D.C. It was built to honor the 16 million U.S. men and women who served in the military during World War II.

The memorial features waterfalls, fountains and a curved wall covered with gold stars. The stars represent the more than 400,000 soldiers who died in the war.

About the size of a football field, the memorial has two 43-foot-tall arches at either end. They symbolize the combat zones across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The arches are surrounded by semicircles of 56 pillars, which represent the District of Columbia as well as each U.S. state and territory at the time of war.

A ceremony to celebrate the opening will be held on Memorial Day weekend. But people didn't wait to visit. "It is beautiful," said war veteran George Lynch.
