Dinosaur Day Care

Did dinosaurs have a tender, loving side? A discovery described this month in the journal Nature suggests that dinosaurs may have taken good care of their young.

Last year, farmers in China found the fossil of an adult Psittacosaurus (sih-tuh-koh-sore-us) grouped with 34 young dinosaurs. Paleontologist David Varricchio helped other dinosaur experts analyze the find. "It's one of the most amazing specimens that I've worked on," says Varricchio.

In the past, scientists had found evidence of adult dinosaurs with half-grown ones, but not with a group of very young ones. "It's the clearest example of dinosaurs looking after their young," says Varricchio of the latest discovery.
