Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell
WHO: Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell
CLAIM TO FAME: This talented team cowrote and illustrated the popular British series the Edge Chronicles. The third book in the 10-book series, Midnight Over Sanctaphrax, comes out this month in the United States.
Q: How did you first come up with the idea for the Edge Chronicles?
Paul: Most books start with words. This whole project started with a map. Chris drew it and gave it to me, saying, "Here is the world, tell me what happens there."
Q: How do the pictures add to the stories?
Chris: A good picture always suggests more than what is shown--those unseen things lurking in the shadows.
Q: Do you have any words of wisdom for kids who want to write fantasies?
Paul: The most important thing about (writing) a good fantasy is believing in the world that it's set in. If you don't believe in the world you've created, then no one else will!
