All in the Family
President George W. Bush and Senator John Kerry can get help, advice and support without leaving home. Both candidates work closely with their wives and children.
"It takes a lot of energy and patience to be the wife of a presidential candidate," says Teresa Heinz Kerry, 66. "One has to work hard, focus and campaign all across the country."
Mrs. Heinz Kerry is no stranger to politics and hard work. Her first husband, H. John Heinz III, was a senator from Pennsylvania. After he died in 1991, she took over the Heinz family's charitable work. Mrs. Heinz Kerry was born in Mozambique, Africa, and speaks five languages. "I think she'd be quite extraordinary as First Lady," John Kerry told TIME.
Laura Bush, 57, has earned high praise as First Lady. A former teacher and librarian, Mrs. Bush has focused much of her energy on promoting education and literacy. "If we can make sure children and adults are literate worldwide," she explains, "we will help countries as they try to rise out of poverty."
Both candidates also get help from their kids. The Bush twins, Barbara and Jenna, 22, crisscross the country, appearing at schools and giving speeches. Kerry's daughters Alexandra, 30, and Vanessa, 27, work to motivate young voters. One of Kerry's stepsons, Chris Heinz, 31, works full-time on the campaign. Now that's real togetherness!
