The Running Mates

On November 2, voters will not only elect a President, but they will also pick a Vice President. The V.P. stands in for the President if he dies, falls ill or leaves office. He also presides over the Senate, casting a tie-breaking vote if necessary, and helps the President make policy decisions.

John Kerry's running mate is Senator John Edwards of North Carolina. His southern charm appeals to many voters. Edwards, 51, is a lawyer and has been a Senator for six years. He says he plans to help America's poor.

Vice President Dick Cheney, 63, is known for tough talk. The seasoned politician has said that the United States must use force when threatened "instead of waiting for another attack."

Will voters judge these candidates on their politics or their personality? Either way, the choice involves more than just the Presidential contenders.
