Spotlight: Lily Dong

Lily Dong, 16, is on a mission to save the planet, one tree at a time. On October 16, Lily's efforts took root in South Pasadena, California. The Arroyo Seco Woodland and Wildlife Park was opened. The area holds some of the last remaining undeveloped land in South Pasadena. Lily's hard work and determination helped city officials set it aside as parkland.

Lily fell in love with the tree-filled canyon in 2000, a year after her family moved to the U.S. from China. She visited Arroyo Seco with her school's science club and decided that the area needed protection. Lily started a campaign to save the four-acre site, writing letters to local leaders. Her message? "This land represents a certain kind of beauty and magnificence that the buildings and the streets in the city lack."
