Two Daring Young Men
What a soaring success! Last month, Kenny Roy and Jimmy Haywood flew round-trip between Compton, California, and Vancouver, Canada. The 20-hour flight landed both boys in the record books. Jimmy, 11, became the youngest black pilot to make an international flight. Kenny, 14, is the world's youngest black pilot licensed to fly solo. Kenny took his flight test and got his license in Canada. Kids can't get their pilots' wings until age 16 in the United States.
Members of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first black fighter pilots to serve in the U.S. Army, welcomed the boys back to the airport. "It's exciting," says Kenny. "I set an example for (other kids)."
