TFK Q&A: Barbara French

WHO: Barbara French

CLAIM TO FAME: This scientist works with Bat Conservation International and other groups that study and care for these nocturnal mammals.

Q Why are people scared of bats?

A Bats are very small animals that are out late at night, when most people are sleeping. Humans don't know much about bats. But the more we learn, the more our fears are lessened.

Q Are bats dangerous?

A Not at all. Bats aren't interested in (hurting) people. Bats are (helpful) because they eat insects.

Q Why are you batty for bats?

A It is really neat to see how bats interact with each other. In some species, the males sing to the females, and the young play together.

Q What were you surprised to learn about bats?

A The places that they live. Bats can be found in trees, caves, burrows and spider webs. Some even roost inside the Egyptian pyramids.

Q Do vampire bats suck people's blood?

A Out of more than 1,100 species of bats, only three are vampire bats. They rarely bite humans, and when they do, they only lick a few teaspoons of blood.
