An Earthquake Shakes Up Japan

A powerful earthquake hit Japan last week. At least 33 people died, and about 2,000 were hurt. It was the strongest quake to rock the country in nearly a decade.

The quake struck the Niigata region northwest of Tokyo, Japan’s capital. More than 100,000 people had to move to shelters. The quake and more than 500 aftershocks damaged homes and roads.

The people of Japan are feeling battered. The earthquake hit less than a week after a typhoon struck southwest Japan, killing 81 people.

A ray of hope emerged when rescue workers pulled 2-year-old Yuta Minagawa from the rubble. He had been trapped for four days. "He was standing up by himself," said rescuer Mitsuo Kiyotsuka.
