Spotlight: Michael Stadther

What is more fun than finding a hidden treasure? Unraveling clues and searching for the prize, says Michael Stadther, the author and illustrator of a new fairy tale called A Treasure's Trove. The largest-ever national treasure hunt kicks off on November 15. That's the day the book goes on sale. Stadther has hidden 12 gold coins throughout the United States. "They're all easily accessible, and none of them are buried," Stadther told TFK. "Some are within 10 feet of where thousands of people pass every day."

Here's the catch: To find the treasures, readers must uncover clues hidden in the book's pages. Whoever finds a coin can redeem it for a one-of-a-kind jewel that is modeled on a character in the book, including a spider, an ant and a butterfly. One of the characters is based on Stadther's dog. Together, the jewels are worth more than $1 million. Stadther designed nine of them and collected the other three on his travels. The gems will be on display at museums and schools across the country starting November 12.

Readers have until December 31, 2007, to hunt for Stadther's treasures. He is confident all will be found. "This is going to be a wonderful family activity," he says. "I hope people have fun!"
