Newsmaker: Hamid Karzai

The results of an October 9 election are finally in. Last Wednesday, Hamid Karzai was officially declared President of Afghanistan. He had been the nation's temporary leader.

Karzai is the first Afghan president to be elected by the country's people. Nearly 8 million voted. It took three weeks to announce the winner because the votes were counted by hand. Also, there were charges of cheating.

A United Nations investigation confirmed that there were some problems with the election. But the problems did not affect the results.

In his acceptance speech, Karzai urged his opponents to work with him. "The Afghan people have placed their trust in us," he said.
