His Vote Was Far Out
The 2004 campaign for President reached a voter in outer space. On October 31, Leroy Chiao, a U.S. astronaut on the International Space Station, cast his ballot while orbiting Earth. He is the first American to vote for President from space. Chiao, 44, said he thought "long and hard" about all the issues facing the nation. He used a secure e-mail connection to cast his vote. It was counted in his hometown of Galveston, Texas. "It is important symbolically to show that every vote does count," he says. Now, that's a real absentee ballot!
