Down with Smoking!
Slowly but surely, Americans are giving up smoking. A report released last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that the smoking rate in the U.S. has continued to drop each year since 1998. Just 22.1% of American adults lit up in 2003, as opposed to 24% in 1998. "It's a slow decline, but at least it is still going down," said the CDC's Corinne Husten.
The government aims to have no more than 12% of U.S. adults smoking by 2010. In 2003, Utah became the first state to meet that goal. Kentucky has the highest rate, at almost 31%.
The CDC has urged states to spend more money on tobacco-control programs, education and laws.
