The Yanks: The Best Team Ever?
"Thaaaaaa Yankees win!" To Yankee fans it was a familiar cry. They'd heard it from the announcer's booth a record 114 times in the regular season and in 11 postseason games. The final time was definitely the sweetest. The Yankees beat the San Diego Padres, 3-0, to sweep the World Series. The Yankees are the only team in history to win 24 world championships. This is their second World Series title in three years. But none of the 1998 Yankees are superstars. Their strength lies in amazing teamwork, says manager Joe Torre.
"The only thing they're interested in is winning," Torre says. "They don't care who gets the winning hit."
Yankee Darryl Strawberry had to sit out the series because he had had cancer surgery. The players wore his number, 39, on their caps. During a clubhouse celebration they chanted, "Straw Man! Straw Man!" Strawberry felt good enough to join his team at a parade in New York last Friday.
The Padres were good sports. Even Padres star Tony Gwynn sang the Yankees' praises: "Sure, we would have liked it to have worked out better," he said, "but the Yankees are probably the best team we've faced all year." Some say the best ever.
