Building A New House
![]() Adam Putnam announces his win with a T shirt. |
In January, a new group of people will be moving into the House. Americans elected all 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives last week. Each state gets a certain number of Representatives based on its population. They are elected to serve a two-year term.
Republicans won 220 races, taking a majority of the seats. Democrats won 211 and independent candidates got two seats. Two races were still undecided.
Some Democrats spent a lot of money to defeat Republican House members who put President Clinton on trial in 1998. The trial, or impeachment, was a dark time for the nation. James Rogan from California and Bill McCollum from Florida helped build the case against Clinton. Both lost their races.
In Florida, Adam Putnam, a 26-year-old Republican, defeated an opponent twice his age. He will be the youngest Congressman.
As in the Senate, Republicans' control of the House is slim. Passing new laws will be difficult unless they cooperate with the Democrats.
